Our History

Africa Women and Youth Organization (AWYO) is a Non Governmental Organization with offices in Germany and Nigeria committed to educating, equipping and empowering African women and young people with migration background to effectively create the desired positive change within their communities and serve as active players in the decision making processes of their communities.

AWYO recognizes social awareness, knowledge and economic independence as key ingredients to the development of young Africans as equal stakeholders in their communities. As a result of this AWYO since 2006 has committed itself to serving as a developmental catalyst in enhancing the contributions of women and young people to development through trainings, seminars, community mobilization and development projects, knowledge sharing.

AWYO invests in continuous research on social issues affecting young Africans living in Diaspora since inception and it has partnered with local government, European Union, in executing its Building Social Confidence Series. These trainings since it was launched has helped develop youngsters in Berlin, provided them with counseling and experience sharing with their counterpart around the world. AWYO also formed a partnership with German language training schools in Berlin to provide Africans and migrants living in Berlin the opportunity to cross the hurdle of language barrier that most immigrants are faced with. In 2008, we did Youth Educational training Project (YET) with focus on building social confidence in young African students in Berlin, with focus on secondary school students in the 7th to 10th grades.

In 2009 AWYO in partnership with Local Government Agency on European Union Funds in Berlin launched the Women Entrepreneurship Training (WET) Programme. WET Programme focused on training women on how to start a business and to effectively run the business. Participants were exposed to business extension workers and monitored for six months after the start of business. The monumental success of this programme has geared AWYO into replicating it in other parts of the world

After 3 years of successful operation in Berlin Germany, a proper assessment of development trend in Africa, PAYE and MDGs in alignment with our areas of focus, AWYO decided to extend its operation into Africa by starting a Nigerian office in order for us to meet our 4 year mission of 'Massive Human Capital Development in African Communities'.

In 2009 AWYO went into partnership with Rivers State Government of Nigeria to run the pilot phase of project FEEDER. FEEDER Project is a scholarship scheme that is currently in developmental stages with two other African countries and 4 other states in Nigeria.
